Injection molding of plastic prototype parts for electronic products
Plastic injection molding principle and process

What is Injection Molding?

Injection molding is a manufacturing process that produces precise, repeatable plastic parts by injecting molten material into a custom-designed mold. In electronics manufacturing, it is commonly used to manufacture housings, overmolded components, and structural parts to protect, support, and connect to PCBAs and mechanical components. Injection molding can integrate functions such as snap-fit mechanisms, stress relief devices, seals, and mounting points, thereby reducing the number of parts and simplifying the final assembly process.

Material Selection For Injection Molding

Choosing the right material is critical for the performance of your part. We work with hundreds of thermoplastics and can help you select the perfect one. The following are some of our commonly used materials. If you do not find the material you are looking for in this list, please contact us.

Inquiry & FAQs

Using injection-molded prototype components in product design offers significant advantages. While rapid prototyping and machined parts play a crucial role, they may not fully reflect the mechanical properties of injection-molded components due to material limitations and variations in manufacturing processes. Creating prototype molds early helps to accurately identify and address potential design and material issues, ensuring a smooth product launch and ultimately cost savings. It's worth noting that the time and cost required to create these injection molds may be comparable to rapid prototyping, but because they are identical to mass-production parts, they offer greater testing potential.

With our expertise in product design, we are able to pinpoint the optimal time for prototype injection molding. We recommend using rapid (3D printed) prototypes before proceeding with prototype injection molding or mold making, as they allow for rapid iteration at a lower cost. Rapid prototypes can typically demonstrate 80-90% of the mechanical functionality. However, if these prototypes fail to accurately reflect the mechanical properties of the injection-molded part, prototype molds must be used instead.

Yes, we offer a production mold solution called "Made-to-Demand." This solution offers several advantages: lower unit part price, multi-cavity machining capability, mold warranty throughout the project lifecycle (we will remake the mold if it wears out), and first-article inspection.

The lead time for a simple prototype mold is 1-2 weeks. Standard production molds typically take 3-6 weeks, depending on their complexity. We will clearly state the lead time in our quotation.

Our standard production lead time is typically 2-4 weeks after T1 sample approval. Small batch production can be faster, and expedited service is available upon request.

Yes, Geyuan Electronics can help you with small-batch production of parts. We can even 3D print your first prototypes. If you need fewer than 1000 pieces but don't want to pay for full-scale production, we have a fixed-rate small-batch production program called SUPERMOLD. This program offers many advantages, including faster time to market, lower initial investment, and guaranteed high-quality parts.

Depending on the application, we can support various special molding processes, such as insert molding and multimaterial molding. The best solution depends on the part geometry, performance requirements, and production needs. Please contact us to confirm the feasibility of your specific design.

Maintaining precise tolerances is crucial in injection molding, ensuring parts assemble correctly and function as intended, thus avoiding potential assembly problems. Geyuan Electronics strictly adheres to the ISO 2768-c general tolerance standard, widely used in the injection molded parts industry. This standard provides a range of tolerances for different features and dimensions, ensuring production consistency and reliability. For projects with higher tolerance requirements, we can meet even stricter specifications based on the specific needs of each customer's application. This flexibility allows us to deliver precision-engineered parts that meet or exceed customer expectations.

Cold runners are channels that cool with the part and are ejected in each cycle, resulting in plastic waste. Hot runner systems keep the plastic molten until the part is formed, eliminating waste and generally reducing cycle time, but the mold cost is higher.

DFM stands for Design for Manufacturability. In this analysis, our engineers examine your design for features that could cause problems during the molding process. We offer this service free of charge because it's in everyone's interest to identify and resolve issues before the steel is cut.

We guarantee the lifespan of our production molds within a certain number of cycles (e.g., 500,000 cycles). If the mold wears out before reaching the warranty period, we will cover the repair or replacement costs.

The maximum size we can support using our injection molding process is 18.9 inches x 29.6 inches x 8 inches (480 mm x 751 mm x 203 mm).

At Geyuan Electronics, our customers own their injection molds! After production is complete, the mold will remain at our factory. If needed, we can ship the mold to you; however, you will be responsible for the associated shipping and packaging costs. If you are unsure whether the mold is compatible with your equipment, our engineers will work with you to confirm.

Of course, confidentiality agreements are crucial for protecting your intellectual property. We value privacy and confidentiality, which is one of the main reasons you choose to manufacture parts in China. Confidentiality is one of the most important factors when choosing a new mold supplier.

  • 1. Mold Closure: The two halves of the injection mold are closed using a hydraulic or mechanical clamping device. This step ensures the mold remains firmly closed during injection and cooling.
  • 2. Injection/Holding Pressure: In the injection step, molten polymer is injected into the mold cavity, filling it to 95-99% capacity. This step establishes the foundation for consistency in each injection. Then, in the holding pressure step, as the material cools and begins to shrink, more material is added to the mold to ensure complete filling.
  • 3. Cooling: After the molten plastic has completely filled the mold cavity, it begins to cool and solidify. This continuous cooling and shrinkage process prepares the mold for opening and demolding.
  • 4. Mold Opening: After the part has cooled, it is demolded from the side of the mold along the parting line.
  • 5. Demolding: After the plastic part has cooled and solidified, the mold opens, and the cooled part is ejected from the mold cavity by ejector pins.

We reduce risk by:

  • Early prototyping and validation help identify design flaws before full-scale production.
  • Optimizing wall thickness, draft angles, gates, and cooling methods through Design for Manufacturing (DFM) in the early stages of the process.
  • Close collaboration between the design, mold, and molding teams avoids "unexpected situations during handover."
  • Continuous mold maintenance and process optimization minimize downtime and scrap.
  • These practices help shorten production cycles, reduce waste, and increase first-pass yields—all of which translate into lower costs and faster time to market.
